to open a shop is easy – to keep it open is an art "Chinese Proverb"

This chinese proverb really hits the nail on the head about running a small business.
Sadly I am attending a “closing down” event soon at a popular cafe in Dee Why.

People start their small businesses for many reasons the most popular are normally, to make money, to have more time with the family, sick of working for someone and being independent and in control of their destiny.

However many people start their businesses for the wrong reasons.

Here’s a short list of some of the don’ts.
You think you are going to have an easy life with someone else doing all the work.

You have a hobby or interest and you think it would be a fun way to earn a living.
You just feel you need a change in your employment.
You are unemployed and feel you have to buy yourself a job.
Somebody else said you would be good at it.

The above mays seem like a good reason to start your own business but none of them are sufficient to guarantee your success.

Do consider starting out in business for yourself if you have any or all of the following attributes:

  • You are a high achiever and feel you could do better for yourself.
  • You are a hard worker and are prepared to work long and hard to make it succeed.
  • You are a positive, entrepreneurial type with lots of energy and bright ideas and feel you are being stifled by your present employers
  • You have a strong desire to build yourself a better future for yourself and your family.

Stay tuned for my next blog that will discuss finding which business is right for you….

Love to hear your thoughts and experiences about what you had to put in to start your business- feel free to post your feedback!
